Behind the app

Why Munshi is free, and what the ads do (and don’t) do

Offline use, many phones and Drive backup cost money to run. Here is plainly how they are paid for.

Many khata apps are free to download and then ask for money the moment you need something real: working without internet, using a second phone, or keeping a backup. We didn’t want Munshi to work that way.

But keeping an app running isn’t free. So here is, plainly, how Munshi pays its bills.

What it costs to run

Your khata is stored in the cloud so it can sync between phones and survive a lost one. That needs servers, storage and security, every month, whether anyone is paying or not. On top of that, someone has to build the updates and answer your questions.

What pays for it

A few small ads, always marked “Ad”. That’s the only income Munshi has. There is no subscription and no data selling.

What stays free

  • Working offline
  • Using Munshi on more than one phone
  • Google Drive backup
  • Reminders and reports
  • App Lock

Where you will and won’t see ads

You will see small ad cards in long lists such as Ledger and Cash Book, and in Reports. You will never see one while you add or edit an entry, sign in, unlock the app or send a reminder.

PDFs for this month and last month are free and instant. A PDF for longer dates, or any Excel file, opens after a short video ad that you choose to watch. If an ad can’t load, for example when you’re offline, your file is made anyway. Nobody should be locked out of their own records because an ad failed.

What advertisers don’t get

Your customers’ names, phone numbers and amounts are never shared with advertisers.

You can change your ad choices at any time in the app under Settings → Privacy choices where it applies, and the details are in our Privacy Policy.

Why we think this is fair

A shopkeeper in a small town shouldn’t have to pay a monthly fee to keep their own records. A few quiet ads, kept away from the moments that matter, are a trade we think is fair. If you disagree, or something feels wrong, tell us. We read every message.

Frequently asked questions

Is Munshi really free?

Yes. There is no subscription. A few small ads pay for the servers and for building and supporting the app.

Does Munshi share my customers’ data with advertisers?

No. Customer names, phone numbers and amounts are never shared with advertisers.

Do exports play ads?

PDFs for this month and last month are free. Longer dates and Excel files open after a short ad you choose to watch; if no ad loads, the file is still made.
