A digital bahi khata works like the paper register: one page per person, a line when goods go on credit, a line when money comes back, and a balance that says what is left. The difference is that the phone adds the balance and does not lose the page. Munshi, made by DIGIT, is a khata app for that job, in English or Urdu, on Android and iPhone. This page says what the book is. The week you leave the notebook is in how to move from a paper khata to an app. A side-by-side with paper is in Munshi and a bahi khata. The day-to-day taps are in how to keep an udhaar ledger.

Bahi khata digital: the register without the lost page

Bahi khata digital still means a list of names and amounts. It does not mean a new kind of trade. Pakistani shops already sell on trust. The register is how that trust is remembered. Paper fails in ordinary ways: a page tears, two people named Ali share a line, the total is added wrong on a tired evening, the book stays at the shop when you need it at home. A digital copy of the same habit keeps a separate account per person, dates every line, and shows the total without a second sum in your head.

Munshi stores customers and suppliers as accounts. You gave is credit: what they owe you goes up. You got is a payment: what they owe you goes down. On a supplier the reading flips in plain language, so unpaid goods show that you owe them. The screen says the result in words. You do not need debit and credit columns to use it.

A digital ledger Pakistan shops can total without a calculator

A digital ledger Pakistan traders ask for is usually this register, not a desktop accounts package. It has to work in Urdu, survive a dead signal, and open fast at the counter. Munshi saves the entry on the phone and syncs when the connection returns. Home shows what you will get from customers and what you will give to suppliers. That pair of totals is the week’s picture: promises in, promises out. Neither number is the cash in the drawer. Mixing those questions is how a shop thinks it is rich because people owe it money it has not received.

Up to five businesses can sit on one account. A kiryana and a side workshop do not have to share customers. Each business has its own people, cash book, bank accounts, expenses and backups. There are no separate staff logins. The phone lock and the app PIN are how you keep the book private.

A digital khata book on the same phone as the cash book

A digital khata book answers who owes whom. The cash book answers what the drawer should hold. A bank account answers what that account should hold. An expense answers what a cost was for. Munshi keeps all four, and it does not copy a tap from one into another. A credit sale is only You gave. When the customer later pays cash, you tap You got and also Cash in, because both facts changed. The difference between the books is written up in cash book, khata and bank book. A kiryana’s full day is in the kiryana hisab.

The app does not manage stock, invoices or barcodes. A note can say “atta, two bags” so you remember the conversation. The shelf is still counted with your eyes. Do not expect the khata to tell you expiry dates or to print a tax invoice.

What you do on the first morning

Pick a start day. Add each person who still owes you, or whom you still owe, once. Enter only the current balance, with a note such as “opening”. Do not retype years of settled lines. From that morning, new credit and new payments go in the app. Keep the paper book beside it for a week and compare. If the totals match, the paper book becomes an archive. If they do not, you still have both, and you can find the missing line while you remember it.

Set the language in Settings. Statements follow the language the app is using, including right-to-left Urdu. Turn on a backup under Backup & restore. The phone keeps a daily copy when you open Munshi, and Google Drive is an optional second copy. A book that lives only in one handset is one drop away from disappearing.

How a reminder fits the book

The register does not collect the money. You do. Agree a day when you give the credit, and write it down. On the bell, Reminders lists people who owe you. Send reminder opens WhatsApp with the name, the shop and the amount already written, in the language of the app. You read it and press Send. Munshi does not send it, and it does not send an SMS behind your back. Wording you can copy, in Urdu, Roman Urdu and English, is in polite payment reminders. The numbered taps are in the reminder steps.

A payment after the message is a new line, You got, the same day. The reminder is not a receipt. If they dispute the figure, send a statement rather than a longer argument. PDF and Excel statements are there for that.

What it is not

It is not a subscription ledger. Munshi is free to download. Small ads marked Ad pay for the servers. They are not shown while you add an entry, sign in, unlock the app or send a reminder. Customer names, phone numbers and amounts are not shared with advertisers. It is not Apna Munshi and not any other app that only shares the name. On the Play Store the package is pk.digit.munshikhata. On the App Store the listing title is Munshi Khata App.

It will not decide who deserves credit. It will not hide a wrong entry by editing history into a round number. A wrong line is fixed by a new line, or by the method in fixing a wrong entry. Deleted lines wait in the Recycle bin.

If you are choosing among apps, read what to look for in a free khata app and test five real customers. The digital book is working when you can say, without opening the notebook, who owes you, what you owe, and whether the drawer matches.

Frequently asked questions

What is a digital bahi-khata and how does it work?

It is a phone register of people and amounts. You add a customer, record credit as You gave and a payment as You got, and the balance updates. Munshi, made by DIGIT, also keeps a cash book, bank accounts and expenses. You still decide who gets credit.

Is a digital bahi khata the same as accounting software?

No. It does not replace a full set of accounts, stock, invoices or barcodes. It replaces the notebook that says who owes the shop and whom the shop owes.

Does Munshi send reminders by itself?

No. Send reminder opens WhatsApp with the amount written. You press Send.
